Chapter 13

The next morning, Yankee Doodle Pigeon arrives in the forest with Basil's message, perching on the window of a tree house somewhere in the forest; once there, he gently taps on the window and blows on his small trumpet; he first person to open it is Colin, now 17 years old, wearing a white T-shirt (with a blue jacket over it) and black jeans.

Colin: (with a mature Irish-accented voice) Oh...good morning, Yankee Doodle. What have you got? (Takes the note that the pigeon hands to him and watches as he flies away) A note? (Begins to read it)

To Whom It May Concern:

Good evening, Mr. Le Furr. It is I, your old friend Basil of Baker Street, here to give you news straight from the Cartoon Kingdom. Now, where should I begin? Oh, yes...

HELP!!! BUTCH HAS TAKEN OVER THE THRONE AND NOW HE'S GONE COMPLETELY MAD!!! First, he ordered the female cats of the land to overhunt, resulting in a mass food shortage. Next, he's turned all the citizens of the kingdom into slaves, building monuments and being subjected under his merciless laws. And finally, in case you didn't notice...sadly I'm a prisoner of the king himself. And I can't believe he's also made me his own personal jukebox.

Young man, that is why I want you and your father to go search for help. If whoever you find doesn't do anything about restoring the Cartoon Kingdom to its former glory, WE'RE ALL DOOMED! In so saying, I wish you the very best of luck...and godspeed...

Colin looks at the note for a moment, before packing his things, as well as his lunch, and letting his dad know that he's going to look for someone to help him overthrow King Butch.

CHORUS: (singing)
Fatshe leso lea halalela
Fatshe leso lea halalela

COLIN: (singing)
Shadowland
The leaves have fallen
That shadowed land
It was our home

The river's dry
The ground has broken
But now I've gone
To where there's hope

And where the journey has led me
Let your prayers be my guide
I cannot go back, my family
But I'll remember my pride

CHORUS: (singing)
Prideland

COLIN: (singing)
I've had no choice

CHORUS: (singing)
My land

COLIN: (singing)
But I will find my way

CHORUS: (singing)
Tear-stained

COLIN: (singing)
Lea halalela

CHORUS: (singing)
Dry land
Take this

COLIN: (singing)
Take this prayer

CHORUS: (singing)
With you

COLIN: (singing)
What lies out there

CHORUS: (singing)
Fatshe leso

COLIN: (singing)
Lea halalela

CHORUS: (singing)
And where the journey has led you
Let this prayer be your guide
Though it may keep you so far away
Always remember your pride

Fatshe leso lea halalela
Fatshe leso lea halalela

COLIN: (singing)
Fatshe leso lea halalela

CHORUS: (singing)
And where the journey has led you
Let this prayer be your guide
Though it may keep you so far away
Always remember your pride

And where the journey has led you

COLIN: (singing)
Giza buyabo, giza buyabo

CHORUS: (singing)
Let this prayer be your guide

COLIN: (singing)
I will return, I will return
Beso bo

CHORUS: (singing)
Though it may keep you so far away

COLIN: (singing)
Giza buyabo, I will return

CHORUS: (singing)
Always remember your pride

COLIN: (singing)
Giza buyabo, oh giza buyabo
Beso bo, my people, beso bo

Meanwhile on that same morning, Bert, Ralph, and Melissa are walking through the forest. Suddenly, a peanut butter aroma floats by, getting Bert's attention.

Bert: Mmmmm...I smell peanut butter cookies...I wonder who's making them...

With a hungry look, he leaves to go after it. Ralph and Melissa notice this.

Ralph: Uh, Bert? (To Melissa) Where's he going?

Melissa: I think he wandered off somewhere.

Bert follows the aroma, in search of its source. Suddenly, he gets the feeling that someone is watching and looks back; when he sees that no one is there, he decides he is imagining things, shrugs a bit, and succeeds to hop over a log.

The raccoon smiles deviosuly as he finally sees the source of the aroma--a backpack somehow hovering over the grass. But then he sees something else, a pair of glowing green eyes staring out at him, belonging to a cat about to pounce on him.

Bert: (nervously) Oh, uh...hi?

Not very far away, Ralph and Melissa stop to hear Bert's yelling and both look concerned.

Melissa: Bert?

Suddenly, Bert rushes by them and tries to go through a root of a tree, only to get stuck. The two raccoons run over to the other side and sees a freaked-out Bert trying to get free.

Ralph: Bert! What happened?

Bert: HE'S GONNA EAT ME!

Melissa: Who? (Looks up and sees the cat running towards them in high speed) Oh! Quick, Ralph, let's get him out of here!

They get down behind Bert and try to push him through from under the root.

Ralph: Geez, Bert. Why do we always have to save your...

He then sees the cat getting dreadfully close on the three raccoons in the "line of" fire and they scream like mad. But at the very last minute, Angel jumps over Bert in the nick of time and pounces on the cat with a fierce meow. The two cats begin to fight, with Ralph and Melissa cheering her on.

Melissa: Way to go, Angel! (To Bert) Don't worry, Bert! We're here for you!

Bert: See? I told you it was a good idea we kept her around.

Angel and the cat tangle for a bit, until she ends up on top of him, pining him down with a thump, startling him. After a while, he looks right into her face, and after searching deep into his memory, he remembers who it was...

Colin: ...Angel?

Angel stares at him, surprised upon hearing him call her by that name. She gets off of him and steps back to look at him, still surprised. He hops back up onto his feet and steps up to her, surprised and hoping that she is whom he believes she is.

Colin: Angel, is it really you?

Angel: Who...who are you? And how'd you know my name?

Colin: Angel, it's me, Colin.

Angel: Colin? That's you?

Colin: The one and the same!

Angel: Oh, Colin, it IS you!

Colin: That's right!

The two best friends, happy to see each other again, run together and greet each other, laughing happily. They seem to bump into each other's head as they giggle.

Angel: Well, how did you...where did you come from...let me tell, ya, it's great to see you...

Colin: Oh! How did you...who...wow...this is fabulous... it's great to see you!

Meanwhile, Ralph and Melissa look dumbstruck. A minute ago, these two were trying to kill each other, now they greeted each other as if they're best friends or something.

Ralph: Excuse me? Hey, excuse me...

Angel: What are you doing out here?

Colin: What am I doing out here? You should explain yourself.

Melissa: Excuse me! What's going on here?

Angel: Oh, sorry, guys. I almost forgot you were standing right here. Ralph, Melissa, this is Colin Le Furr II--he's my best friend.

Ralph: Friend?

Angel: (calls out) Hey, Uncle Bert! Get yourself out of there, and come over here.

Bert: Coming! (Manages to get himself unstuck from under the root) So, who's this big guy?

Angel: Colin, this is my uncle Bert Raccoon. Bert, Colin.

Bert: Pleased to meet ya.

Melissa: Same here.

Colin: The pleasure's all mine.

Ralph: How do you do...wait a second. Let's see if I get this straight. Angel, you know him, he knows you, yet he wants to eat Bert. And everybody's...okay with this?

Colin: This is great! Wait 'til everybody back home finds out you've been here all this time. And your mom...what will she think?

Angel gulps. She remembers Butch asking her what her mother would think of the death of Snooper being her entire fault.

Angel: He...doesn't necessarily have to know. In fact, nobody has to know.

Colin: Angel, of course they do. Everyone back home believed that you were killed.

Angel: They...do?

Colin: Yes. Butch told us about the cattle stampede.

Angel: He did? Errr...what else did he tell you?

Colin: What else matters? You're alive, that's what is important. And that means...you're the queen.

Bert: Whoa, whoa, whoa, queen?

Angel: I'm a queen?

Bert: But she's no queen! (To Angel) Are you?

Angel: Of course not.

Colin: Angel!

Angel: No, I'm not the queen. Okay, yeah, maybe I was gonna be. But, that was a long time ago!

Ralph: You mean all this time you were supposed to be the queen. And now that you are one, you never told us?

Angel: Well, I'm still the same girl.

Bert: But with power!

Colin: Uh, listen, could you guys excuse us for a few minutes?

Bert: No problem. Whatever you got to say, you can say in front of us, right?

Angel: Actually...I think you should go. I need some...alone time with my friend, that's all.

Bert: Oh...I see. It starts. And you think you know a guy.

The three raccoons leave the cats alone. Angel chuckles a bit.

Angel: You learn to love 'em. (Turns to Colin and sees that he is bowing her head away sadly) Are you all right?

Colin: It's like...you came back from the dead. (Looks back at her) You have no idea how much this would mean to everyone. (Turns away again) And what it means to me.

Angel: It's all right, Colin. Trust me, everything's going to be okay.

Colin smiles and holds her close to him.

Colin: I really missed you.

Of course, Angel looks surprised at what her friend is doing. Her first instinct would have normally been to pull away, but something deep down inside stops her. So instead of pulling away, however, she smiles as she nuzzles and hugs him back, blushing as well.

Angel: And I missed you as well.

As the two continue nuzzling heads together and hugging, the raccoons look on from the bushes. Bert looks disappointed, as he knew what's going on and was not happy at all; Ralph and Melissa, on the other hand, look on with awe.

Melissa: Isn't this wonderful?

Ralph: Yep, him and her alone.

Bert: What are you guys talking about?

RALPH: (singing)
We can see what's happening

Bert: What?

RALPH: (singing)
And it's very sweet

Bert: What do you mean?

RALPH: (singing)
They'll fall in love and here's the bottom line
It's time we let them be

Bert: (smiling) Oh.

MELISSA: (singing)
The sweet caress of twilight
There's magic everywhere
And with all this romantic atmosphere
Something wonderful's in the air

Near a waterfall, a song plays as Colin and Angel have a walk near a waterfall. They smile as they walk around each other, taking in each other's movements.

FEMALE SINGER: (singing)
Can you feel the love tonight?
The peace the evening brings?
The world, for once, in perfect harmony
With all its living things

They stop at a pond and sit beside it; they then decide to have a picnic by it. While Colin is drinking from a can of soda with his eyes closed, Angel looks up and sings in her head.

ANGEL: (singing)
There are so many things to tell him
But how to make him see
The truth about my past? Impossible!
He'd turn away from me

As Colin is drinking, he opens his eyes to observe Angel as he sings in his head as well.

COLIN: (singing)
She's holding back, she's hiding
But what? I can't decide
Why won't she be the queen I know he is?
The queen I see inside?

Colin looks up and frowns as he continues to look at Angel, who is looking back at him and smiling sheepishly. After she was done looking at him, she smiles and runs off somewhere. Colin looks back, puzzled. Suddenly, Angel runs back shouting, "Cannonball!" and jumps into the pond with a big splash.

CHORUS: (singing)
Can you feel the love tonight?
The peace the evening brings?

As Colin looks in the water looking for Angel, she suddenly appears and pulls him into the pond playfully. He comes out with all his fur wet and freaked out; Angel comes out all wet and with a smile on her face. Colin looks at Angel with a wicked smirk and pushes her back into the pond as he runs off laughing. They run through a field, disturbing a bunch of birds, as they laugh happily.

CHORUS: (singing)
The world, for once, in perfect harmony
With all its living things?

Later that night, the two run off and get into a playful tussle. The tussle then turns into a fight, which suddenly has them rolling down the hill, tumbling to the bottom. When they reach the bottom, Colin finds himself managing to pin Angel, a big first for him. The two laugh, before Colin kisses Angel quickly on the cheek, making her stare at him in surprise.

Can you feel the love tonight?
You needn't look too far
Stealing through the night's uncertainties
Love is where they are

Colin gives Angel a seductive smile, making her blush as she smiles back. Finally, the two nuzzle each other, both grinning and blushing as they do.

COLIN: (singing)
And if she feels the love tonight
In the way I do

ANGEL: (singing)
It's enough for this restless wanderer

ANGEL & COLIN: (singing)
Just to be with you...
