Chapter 1
For a time, Wren lived in an apartment with one of her friends. When they decided to go to Knotts Berry Farm, Wren couldn't help but follow them. Soon, she found herself in Ghost Town, a section of the theme park, and she wandered around in Calico Square, where a dance was taking place. Wren was scared--she didn't even know how to dance!
Enter the fickle finger of Fate--she heard some barking, and turned around to see a large bulldog chasing a brown cat wearing a white trenchcoat with a light-green plaid deerstalker cap. The cat saw Wren and hid behind her for protection. Noticing this, she simply shooed the bulldog away by taking out a dog biscuit and throwing it far away. Then, as soon as the dog was gone, Wren said, "Are you all right, sir?"
"Of course, I'm all right," answered the cat. "So long as I don't have any bite marks."
"Why was that big bulldog chasing you?"
"I don't know. But he was awfully angry when I accidentally spilled soda on that little kid of his."
The cheerful square dance music then shifted into an 80s love song. The mood also changed--the cat looked up at Wren and asked her if she could dance with him. She replied, "Oh, I'm not a very good dancer. You see..." The cat smiled and said, "It's okay."
While they were dancing, Wren asked him who he was. "What's your name, anyway?"
"I'm Super Snooper," answered the cat. "They call me 'The World's Greatest Private-Eye'. What's yours?"
"Wren Blackpaws."
"Wow! What a beautiful name."
"Thanks. What were you doing here in Knotts Berry Farm?"
"Nothing. I was just hanging out."
"WITHOUT A TICKET?!"
"Well, luckily for me, they noticed that I was a famous figure and decided to let me in. I was free."
"I wasn't. I had to ask my friends to lend me money to buy a ticket."
"Ouch. I know how that feels to be poor. Wait a sec...were YOU poor?"
Wren sighed. She began telling him the story of her life in a mobile home park, about the people that taunted her and her family for their way of living, and about how she left the park to seek her fortune. The cat, named Snooper, gasped. He said, "That's a shame. You must've been very, very poor!"
"It's true," said Wren. "Have you ever grown up in a mobile home park?"
"No."
"Have you ever been teased by other people in the community because of the way you live?"
"No."
"Then you must've been luckier than me."
"That's right. I was a world-famous private-eye. Sure, I might not be the brightest tool in the shed, but I had managed to save the day a few times."
"What was the name of the mobile home park you lived in?"
"...Rusty Can Village."
"Does everybody live there?"
"Everybody. We form the largest community in the history of the city of Fantasia. We don't have to pay rents for our houses, as long as we keep them nice and neat. We plan many good activities, and...it even has a playground and a barbeque center. It's a family park."
"It sounds pretty exciting."
"It is! Except for me."
Snooper looked at her in concern. He asked, "What's wrong, Wren?"
"Sometimes," answered Wren, sobbing sadly. "Sometimes it's so hard to keep a smile on your face, especially when everybody calls you 'trailer trash' all the time..."
She put her face in her paws and sobbed wildly, walking away to a nearby bench. Snooper followed her and sat down next to her. He said, "You're very poor. But I won't mind it--I was used to meeting people like you who had spent their entire lives in a mobile home park. Say, I know what can cheer you up--do you like ice cream?" Wren looked up and nodded. Snooper continued, getting up, "Then I'll get you ice cream. I'll have chocolate, and you can have strawberry. I'll be right back!"
Wren waited until Snooper returned with two cones full of strawberry and chocolate ice cream. When he tripped on a crack in the ground, he fell down with a yelp and let go of one of the cones. The strawberry ice cream went flying straight to Wren's face with a splat. Snooper looked up and saw her with ice cream dripping from her furry forehead. She gave him a serious look, before cracking an amused smile and laughing. Snooper also laughed. It was obvious that the two had started to fall in love.
Wren and Snooper continued to have fun in Knotts Berry Farm. They played all the best games and went on all the best rides. One of Wren's favorite rides was the one with the rafter, and Snooper was on that ride with her. It was fantastic, and the water had splashed around them on all sides. Wren even thought Snooper looked adorable with his fur all wet!
It was not long before they began to consider going into a serious relationship. They started dating each other for no less than two months. They ate out at all the fancy restaurants, exchanged love letters, and contacted each other by phone. Then, there finally came the moment of truth. It was February 14--Valentine's Day. It was snowing outside. Wren loved this time of the year, because she loved snow--it reminded her of the time she and her old friends played outside and made snow angels and snowmen back in Rusty Can Village. But from the moment she looked out the window, she got more than just the beauty of the snow. Written all over the snow was her name, along with four words that she swore she would never forget: "Wren, will you marry me?"
And standing next to the message was Snooper himself, smiling shyly and holding up a small box with a 14-carat diamond ring. Wren blushed. Never in her life had she expected him to ask such a tenderhearted question. She knew she had to go back to Rusty Can Village.
Her parents were surprised at her recent return to the mobile home park, but when she introduced them to Snooper and announced their engagement, they gladly accepted him. Soon, the wedding took place in the center of the mobile home park. It was a very large occasion--everybody was expected to come. Wren and Snooper exchanged vows and rings, promising to be husband and wife forever until the day they die. And then there was some food, games, and tons of fun. Yes, they were very happy.
After the party was over, Wren's parents gave their daughter a pleasant three-bedroom mobile home for her and Snooper to live in. Once Snooper carried her over the threshold and brought her inside the house for their first night together, she knew her future was going to get a little bit brighter.
